Travel on a Budget
October 5, 2009
For some people, it may seem worth your while to pay a little extra for a nicer hotel. After all, when you travel you want to be comfortable and have all your needs taken care of for you. But did you know that upscale hotels are typically the hotels that charge you for just about every amenity that they offer? For example, most of the luxury hotels charge more for telephone calls, Internet use, etc. So if you are looking to spend less, but still have a nice hotel, your best bet is to stick with a mid-range hotel. These hotels typically offer free breakfast, free Internet use, and other perks that their higher priced competitors will charge you for.
To get even more out of your hotel stay, here are some additional tips that will help make your stay more enjoyable and wallet friendly:
It never hurts to ask for upgrades: When you check in to your hotel, ask the clerk if they are offering any additional perks that might benefit you. Often, the clerk will throw in some upgrades for free.
Don’t waste money on room service: Room service seems like a nice luxury, until you get your bill and realize that you have been charged a fee to have the food brought to your room, an additional fee for tip, and the food is much pricier (and much worse) than it would be elsewhere. If you want to eat in your room, consult a phone book or ask the concierge what local take-out is available. You can get a local restaurant to deliver to your room for much less than the cost of room service. Plus, you’ll have a better selection and much better food!
Say no to valet parking: Unless you have a lot of extra cash to tip for valet parking, take the time to learn where you can park your vehicle yourself. Each time to use valet, you will have to tip at least $10, so use this luxury sparingly.
Avoid the in-room bar: Again, the mini bar in your room is a luxury that you will pay a lot for. These items are all overpriced by large margin. You can avoid this temptation by planning ahead. Ask for local convenience or grocery stores where you can stock up on the items you like before you feel compelled to crack open the mini bar. You will save a lot of money!
