However if you search long enough and wade through the mountains of information on hand you will soon discover that a lot of it is contradicting. So how do you know which is true and which isn’t.

Well the problem with search engine optimisation is that no one knows, but the search engines what actually is true and what is not. A lot of good search engine optimisers will do their own research and come to there own conclusions. If you are lucky they will share their finding on their blog for all to see. The thing I say about SEO is unless the information you are reading is from an official source (form Google for example) then if you hear it once dismiss it, if you hear it twice, dismiss it again and if you hear it three times treat it with scepticism.
